Tips For Burning Your Soy Candle

To get the best scent throw and longest burn time out of your soy candle there are a few simple rules to follow.

Number One - Allow Enough Burn Time

Please ensure that you allow enough time when you light your candle to ensure that you get a full 'melt pool' meaning that the wax melts right to the edges of the container, particularly the first time you light it. Candles have a memory and are quite temperamental, if you do extinguish your candle before it has had time to burn out to the edges, the candle will keep its memory and only burn out that far again.

Allowing a full melt pool will guarantee an even burn, maximum fragrance throw and means you avoid tunnelling (when the wick burns down but you still have wax on the sides of your candle jar).

Our Medium and Large Geo, Rockstud, Tear drop, classic or Trinket jars could take around 1 hour to melt to the edges, whereas our Mini Jars may only take 30 minutes, so it really depends on the size of the candle as to how much time you allow. Although, in saying that please don’t burn your candle for too long. Usually around 3-4hrs is plenty (or even just 1- 2hrs for our smaller candles).

Number Two - Trim Your Wicks

It is best to always trim the wick to approx. 0.7cm or just below the burnt mushroom top before you relight your candle.  We use natural wicks which are zinc and lead free. The wicks have a paper braid look and are designed to ‘self trim’ by bending at the tip while burning - this can look like a mushroom top. Trimming will prevent the wick from smoking or sparking and make your candle burn more economically.

It's really important however to not to trim the wick too short, if this happens, it will result in the wick producing a small flame which won't be strong enough to melt the wax to the edges of the container and you will get tunnelling - as mentioned above.

Number Three - Light All Your Wicks

Warning: never leave a burning candle unattended and always burn on a flat, heatproof surface.  Keep away from curtains, pets and children. Trim wick to 1cm before burning and only burn for 3-4 hours at a time.  Stop burning when 1cm of wax remains.

If you have a multi wick candle you will ensure the longest burn time and best scent throw by lighting all the wicks.  If you don't you will get tunnelling and much of your candle will be wasted.

Number Four - Candle Safety

Warning: never leave a burning candle unattended and always burn on a flat, heatproof surface.  Keep away from curtains, pets and children. Trim wick to 1cm before burning and only burn for 3-4 hours at a time.  Stop burning when 1cm of wax remains.
