Why We’re So Fussy About Fragrance
We don’t believe in “that’ll do”
When it comes to fragrance, we’re a little bit fussy.
Actually, very, very fussy.
We could make things much simpler for ourselves. We could choose one fragrance house, pick a range of scents from their catalogue and use those fragrances across our candles, wax melts and diffusers.
But where’s the fun in that?
More importantly, we don’t think that every fragrance house does every fragrance equally well.
And if we’re going to put the Essence name on it, “that’ll do” simply isn’t good enough.
We shop around for the good stuff
Over time, we’ve explored fragrances from many different fragrance houses, often trying different versions of the same fragrance profile.
And yes, sometimes the difference is surprisingly noticeable.
One fragrance house might create an incredible vanilla, while another absolutely nails a fruity fragrance. One might have the perfect floral, while another produces a woody or spicy scent that is simply irresistible.
So we don’t limit ourselves to one supplier.
Instead, we choose each fragrance based on who we think does it best.
That means the fragrances in our range may come from a variety of fragrance houses. We’re not interested in having the biggest catalogue just for the sake of having more fragrances.
We’re interested in having fragrances that we genuinely love.
A lot of sniffing goes on around here
Choosing a new fragrance isn't simply a matter of reading a description and thinking, “Yep, that sounds nice.”
There’s testing. Comparing. Smelling.
Then smelling again.
And sometimes wondering why something that sounded absolutely amazing on paper doesn't quite smell the way we imagined it would. 😂
We test fragrances against the kind of experience we want Essence customers to have.
Does it smell beautiful?
Does it have character?
Does it make us want to keep smelling it?
Would we happily have it filling our own home?
And, perhaps most importantly…
Is it good enough to earn a place in the Essence range?
If the answer isn't a very enthusiastic yes, it doesn't make the cut.
Why this matters to you
When you choose an Essence candle, wax melt or reed diffuser, you're not necessarily getting the fragrance that was easiest for us to source.
You're getting one that we chose.
We’ve done the shopping around, the comparing and the very serious business of sniffing lots of fragrances so that we can select the versions we believe are the best.
It's one of the little things that happens behind the scenes that you might never know about when you simply click “add to cart.”
But we think it's worth doing.
Because home fragrance should be more than something that sort of smells nice.
It should change the atmosphere of a room. It should make you stop for a second when you walk through the door. It should create a feeling, bring back a memory or simply make your home feel a little bit more you.
We’re fussy. And we’re okay with that.
We don't claim to have the only good fragrances out there.
Taste is personal, after all.
But we do care about what goes into the Essence range, and we're prepared to put in the work to find fragrances we believe are worth sharing with you.
So yes…
We're fussy.
Very, very fussy.
Because when it comes to fragrance, “that’ll do” isn't good enough.
